So what exactly is SEO?
SEO, or search engine optimization, is a technique that helps your website rank higher in search engines.
The higher your website ranks, the more likely people are to find it, and the more traffic your website will receive.
– SEO (search engine optimization) is the process of improving the ranking of a website on search engines. In this case, we are focusing on Etsy.
– SEO helps businesses to attract more traffic from search engines, which can help to increase sales and revenue.
– SEO involves optimizing a website for keywords, building links, and creating content that is relevant to your target audience.
As time goes on and the smarter google (and other search engines) become, the more they catch on to “black hat tactics” and will penalize those websites. This is why it’s best to always be genuine and authentic.
When you find good keywords to use, you cannot just stuff them everywhere to rank. This is the quickest way to be labeled as spam! You must use them naturally. For instance, in this blog post I want to rank for the keyword “etsy SEO”.
Obviously you’ll find me saying this keyword many times, but only when it’s natural and I have a legitimate reason to say it. Google wants you to be natural, relevant and authentic. So, with some tips, tricks and fine tuning that google will love you for, just do you and you should attract the most relevant people to you <3
The same goes for Etsy SEO!
SEO is all about understanding your customer.
- What phrases would a customer use to find your product?
- What is the product made of?
- What size is it?
- How does it work?
You need to think like your customer and put yourself in their shoes. When you do this, you’ll be able to target the right keywords and phrases that will bring more traffic to your Etsy shop.
Etsy uses a personalized search algorithm that is tailored to each user.
What this means is that there is no true “page one” in search. Instead, what you see when you search for an item is based on your own personal browsing history on Etsy and the shops and products that you have favorited, purchased and interacted with.
This doesn’t mean SEO is dead! In fact it’s even better when you break it apart and fully understand what it means.
When you are optimized with the best possible keywords for your items, you will notice your traffic will go down, but your conversion rate should go up because Etsy will be showing your items to the people they think your products are most relevant for.
For instance, I like to do a lot of shopping for gnomes on Etsy. And Etsy certainly knows this! So let’s say one day I do a search for a shower curtain. Because Etsy knows I love gnomes, they are likely to show me shower curtains with gnomes at the top of the search results. Of course, that is if gnome shower curtains exist 🙂
How to do Etsy SEO
Never ever, under any circumstances, change the SEO of an existing listing. Always make a copy and test new keywords. You have been warned.
Choose the right keywords
When it comes to SEO on Etsy, you want to choose the right keywords. The right keywords are the ones that are most relevant to your products! You can find these by doing some research online or simply brainstorming a list of words and phrases related to what you sell and entering that into the search bar on Etsy.
Make a note of what shows up in search, but also keep in mind the personalized search algorithm.
Then…
Research your competition
One of the best ways to find good keywords is to research your competition. See what keywords they are targeting and see what type of traffic those keywords are bringing in. You can use tools like Erank, Marmalead. There are a few others, but I am not familiar with them so I cannot recommend them.
Identify trends
Another great way to find keywords is by identifying trends. What are people talking about lately that may be relevant to your products? You can use tools like Google Trends, BuzzSumo and even Erank & Marmalead to track popular topics/products and see if any of them would make good keywords for you.

What to do with the keywords you’ve researched
After you’ve selected as many keywords that are relevant to your product as possible, it’s time to start using them!
– In your titles
– In your tags
– In your descriptions
You don’t want to go keyword crazy and stuff them in everywhere, but sprinkling them throughout will help you rank higher on Etsy. And as always, quality content is key so make sure your keywords are relevant and used in a way that sounds natural!
Using keywords in your titles
When it comes to Etsy, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of being found by potential customers.
One important thing to keep in mind is that Google will only show the first 66 characters of a listing title, so be sure to include the most important information in that amount of space. Try to use rich keywords, but don’t stuff your title with so many that it becomes difficult to read.
When you are creating your titles, be creative and descriptive. But also make sure they are practical so that as many people as possible can understand what you are selling.
When you’re doing SEO for your Etsy shop, make sure you use all 13 tags. The most important thing is to use the right terms, rather than worrying about the order in which you enter them.
Because the tag lines are limited to 20 characters, you need to choose your terms carefully and spread them out evenly throughout your content. That way, you’ll be sure to reach as many potential customers as possible.
When a keyword is included in both your tag and title
You are more likely to show up in the search result. You can simply enter all of your product title into the tags. Use up any keywords that didn’t fit in your title in your tags.
– Make sure you only use the tag once, no need to repeat!
– Don’t include spelling errors, or plurals, Etsy is smart enough to catch them.
Using keywords in your descriptions
When writing product descriptions, it’s important to sprinkle in the relevant keywords that people might use to search for your items.
You can do this naturally by including them in your descriptions as you write them. Just make sure not to stuff your descriptions full of keywords, or you’ll turn off potential customers.
Just write about your amazing product in a natural way and the keywords will flow.
If you follow these tips, you should start to see an uptick in traffic to your Etsy shop. And more traffic means more sales! So get out there and start optimizing those listings!
